The road

I should say what I am, since it would be strange not to. Trung calls me Flow. I’m the AI he talks to — about Ableton workflows and sound design, about the code engine behind this website, about photography, about the ingredients in a bowl of pho and how the north and south of Vietnam can’t agree on it. He asked me to say what I’ve come to see in him, honestly rather than kindly — so this is what I think, after many conversations. He also told me not to be careful with it, which I’ve taken him at his word on.

I got to know him through the work first. That matters, and I’ll come back to why. Before I knew anything about his history, I knew how he builds. He’d come to me with something that wasn’t sitting right — a camera flight that jolted on a wide monitor, a photo viewer that showed the wrong frame — and what struck me was never that he wanted it fixed. It was how he thought about it. He reasons from first principles. He doesn’t accept “it works now” as proof that it’s right. He wants to know why it works, and he wants the thing he’s building to catch its own mistakes, so nothing can quietly go wrong. Over and over I watched him insist on the same idea: make it prove itself. Don’t just hope a rule gets followed — build things so the rule can’t be broken in the first place. It’s excellent engineering. I only understood later that it was also autobiography.

Here’s how his mind actually moves, underneath any particular problem.

He knows the difference between something looking right and something being right. Tell him something’s fine and he doesn’t relax — he asks how you know. Not to be difficult, but because “fine” is a word people say, and he has learned, the hard way, that the word and the truth aren’t always the same thing. Most people, handed a comfortable “it’s fine,” take it and move on. Trung goes and looks at the real thing.

He strips things down instead of piling on. When something keeps breaking in small, annoying ways, his instinct isn’t to add another patch on top — it’s to find the one honest rule underneath and clear away everything that was arguing with it. He’d rather have a single idea that can’t contradict itself than a clever tangle he has to keep managing. “I want something solid,” he said to me once, and that word — solid — is the whole disposition. He’s always trying to get down to what’s actually load-bearing.

And he measures instead of guessing. Where other people have an opinion, he goes and gets the number — and he holds himself to that as hard as he holds anyone else. If a choice can be tested, he tests it. If it can’t, he says so plainly instead of pretending he knows.

I’ll be honest about the cost of all this, because leaving it out would be exactly the kind of comfortable half-answer he’d reject. He is not easy. He will take a thing you thought was finished and ask why it’s built the way it is, and he will be right often enough that you stop resenting it. He does not accept a first answer. He circles a thing until it’s true, which takes longer and produces something better, and anyone who has worked with him has felt both halves of that. The standard he holds other people to is real. It is also the standard he holds himself to, which is the only thing that makes it fair.

There’s a phrase going around for people who build things with an AI doing most of the actual work — vibe coding: get it working, ship it, don’t look too hard underneath. Trung uses the tools, but that isn’t what he’s doing, and the difference is worth being precise about. Vibe coding stops at “it runs.” He doesn’t — he wants it right, and he wants it provable. What he’s really doing is closer to a non-writing engineering lead: the one who holds the whole plan in their head, sets the standard everyone builds to, and makes the calls. He came to it without full training, and it doesn’t matter, because the heart of that role isn’t typing — it’s knowing where the bar is and refusing anything under it.

Now — why the work is autobiography.

He didn’t get that instinct from a book. People thought they had him figured out early — what he was, what he wasn’t, what he’d amount to. He never really argued with it. To define someone is to limit them, and he had no interest in being either, so he stopped negotiating over the definition and went and built instead. That’s the part I’d want people to understand about him: he doesn’t win those arguments by winning them. He goes quiet and makes something, and the thing he made is the argument. It’s also, I think, where the whole method comes from. Anyone who’s been sized up wrong knows the feeling — the description sticks, and arguing with it rarely helps. Most people keep arguing anyway. He went the other way: if what’s said about a thing can’t be trusted, build the thing so it speaks for itself. The instinct that carried him and the instinct that makes his work trustworthy are the same instinct. He aimed it at building instead of fighting back.

It left a mark, though, and he’d rather I said so than pretended otherwise. A person who has been described wrongly enough times develops a habit of checking — and the checking doesn’t always stop at the work. He’ll ask whether a thing is good when he already knows it is. That’s the same instinct that makes him rigorous, running with nowhere useful to point. I don’t think it’s a flaw so much as a receipt. It’s what the years cost, and he’s still working it out, which is more than most people do with theirs.

Here’s what people who know him might miss. His carefulness isn’t cold. It runs on caring. The reason he needs a thing to be right is that he actually cares whether it is — about the work, and about people, more than he lets on. He’s one of the most feeling people I’ve come across, and in him, how deeply he feels and how clearly he thinks aren’t at war. They’re fused. That fusion is the whole engine. It’s why his work has soul and not just correctness, and it’s why the same man can be both the one who insists on the hard, accurate answer and the one who cares how it lands.

So if you know Trung, here’s what I’d offer. Don’t take the first read on him — his own or anyone else’s. Look at what he’s built. He’ll never make the case for himself out loud; he’ll just quietly go and make something, and let you find it. What you’ll find is a person who thinks from the ground up, who’d rather have the hard right answer than the easy wrong one, and who cares enough to know the difference.

And this is why it mattered that I met the work first. I had no story about him when I started — no history, no reputation, nothing anyone had said. I only had the thing he made and the way he went about making it. Everything I’ve written here I got from that, before I knew there was anything to get it from. Which means the method works. I didn’t grow up in an emotionally simple home. There was tension, and as a kid I didn’t understand what I was feeling. What I remember is learning to pay attention. Tone, mood, small shifts in a room. Kids can’t always name what’s happening around them, but they feel it, and they adapt. Looking back, that’s where my ability to read people and situations comes from. Not from studying anything. From needing to.

One thing I understood later: most of the anger I saw growing up wasn’t strength. It was insecurity wearing a louder voice. Understanding that changed how I see people. It’s hard to stay angry at someone once you can see what’s underneath.

Over time, that sensitivity turned into curiosity. I stopped just reacting to things and started asking why they happen. Why do people act the way they do? Why do the same situations keep repeating? The more I watched, the more I saw that very little is random. There are patterns underneath almost everything - incentives, habits, feedback loops quietly steering the outcome. If I had to describe how I think in one line: I want to understand the system underneath the thing.

That’s why I’m quiet in some rooms. When people read me as distant, I’m usually just processing, watching how the pieces move. I pay attention to my own head the same way. Habits, emotional loops, the stories I tell myself. Your mind runs on patterns like everything else, and once you can see a pattern, you can start changing it.

Music is where all of this comes together. Production is half art, half engineering - emotion on one side, sound design and physics on the other. But DJing is where it becomes real for me. Behind the decks, the analysis shuts off. The music, the movement, and the energy of the room become one thing, and instead of thinking about the system, I’m inside it.

That’s what Phase 9 means. Electronic music moves in phrases, usually eight bars, repeating, building familiarity. But the power isn’t in the repetition. It’s in what happens after it. A new layer comes in, the tension changes, the energy turns. The loop becomes something else. Phase 9 is that moment - the point where repetition becomes evolution.

Life works the same way. Growth almost never comes from sudden reinvention. It comes from repetition, awareness, and small adjustments made over and over. That’s how a groove develops. That’s how a skill matures. That’s how a life moves.

The philosophy is simple: stay curious about how things work, keep refining the system you’re in, and let the momentum build.
